December 4, 2014
The Lowdown
If you blinked, you probably missed some possessions during No. 20 Iowa State’s 95-77 win over No. 18 Arkansas. With two of the fastest offenses in the nation, the Cyclones and Razorbacks didn’t disappoint, putting up 172 points with Iowa State shooting 64 percent from the field.
Five players ended the night in double figures for Iowa State, led by Bryce Dejean-Jones with 27, Georges Niang with 26, Dustin Hogue with 14, Monte Morris with 11 and Naz Long with 10.
But the defense is what kept the Cyclones in the game, forcing 14 turnovers and only allowing 16 points in the paint to a team that out-matched them for most of the game in size.
Turning Point
After Arkansas cut the ISU lead to 11, the Cyclones held onto a 13-point lead with 5:30 left in the game. Dejean-Jones pulled up and hit his fourth three-pointer of the night. A Niang tip-in off a missed shot pulled the Cyclones away for good.
The X-Factor
Bryce Dejean-Jones and Georges Niang — The duo combined for 53 points on 17-for-20 shooting, 12 rebounds and 10 of the team’s 19 assists. Hot shooting from the Lamar game carried over with Dejean-Jones going a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the three-point line, while Niang hit 6-of-6 free throws.
Niang and Dejean-Jones took turns sparking the offense during droughts and helped keep Arkansas, a team that averaged 90 points per game coming into Hilton, to 77 points.
