The United States’ oldest living veteran
November 14, 2014
Richard Overton of Texas is the oldest living veteran, and he is 108 years old. Overton still lives in Texas and still lives in the same house he bought when he returned from duty in World War 2.
Even though Overton is 108 years old, he still continues to live an active lifestyle that includes attending church every Sunday, not before adding a little whiskey to his coffee.
The Washington Post reported that Overton continues to smoke cigars daily and when he was in the military he was a part of the all-black 188th Engineering Aviation Battalion.
Upon returning from active duty in World War 2, Overton returned to a country that was still divided by race and even though he served bravely, he didn’t always receive as much appreciation and love that he should have deserved.
Overton told CNN that he never thought that there would ever be a black man as the President of the United States.
Overton had a career working in a furniture store in Austin, Texas and retired at the age of 65. However, Overton kept being asked to return to work and didn’t finally retire until he turned 100 years old, much older than when most people retire.
According to the Washington Post he is three days older than the second oldest living Veteran, a woman named Lucy Coffey who served in The Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps in 1943.
