ISU volleyball wins fifth-set replay against Texas Tech

Morgan Kuhrt prepares for the play during a match against TCU. The ISU volleyball team beat TCU on Nov. 15. Five sets were played, with the Cyclones winning three and TCU winning two.

In a seemingly unprecedented move, the NCAA ruled Nov. 25 that the ISU volleyball team would replay the last half of the fifth set from the Cyclones’ loss at Texas Tech on Nov. 26.

That ruling ended up playing out in Iowa State’s favor, as the Cyclones defeated the Red Raiders, 18-16.

The result boosts Iowa State’s record to 16-9 overall, 8-6 Big 12, and drops Texas Tech to 14-13 overall, 2-13 Big 12.

The ruling came after Iowa State protested a call made by an official in the teams’ first match of the year, which was played Oct. 18. Iowa State argued it should not have been penalized for a substitution infraction that resulted in a point awarded to Texas Tech, making the score 9-4 at the time.

The fifth-set rematch played Nov. 26 began with the score set at the point that call was made in the last match, an 8-5 TTU lead with Iowa State serving.

Since the replay was supposed to reflect the result of the match in Lubbock, Texas, only essential personnel like players, coaches and athletic department employees were allowed inside Hilton Coliseum in an effort to maintain a neutral environment.

The ISU volleyball team squares off with Texas Tech in its regularly scheduled match at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 26 at Hilton Coliseum. Typical ISU volleyball regulations regarding fan entry will be resumed as normal.
