Power rankings: Big 12 volleyball
October 20, 2014
1. Texas (14-0, 6-0 Big 12): The Longhorns continue to plow through the Big 12. They’ve won 18-of-21 sets in conference play, including their last nine.
2. Kansas State (17-3, 4-2 Big 12): The Wildcats swept Texas Christian on the road last week, a tough feat against any Big 12 team. There’s no shame in a loss to Texas, so Kansas State remains at the No. 2 spot.
3. Kansas (15-5, 3-3 Big 12): After three straight losses to open Big 12 play, Kansas looks to have found its stride. They could rival the Wildcats for second place, but a five set loss in their head-to-head matchup keeps the Jayhawks in third.
4. Oklahoma (14-5, 5-1 Big 12): The Sooners’ only conference loss has come in Ames, but the rest of their Big 12 resume isn’t overly impressive. Road matches against Kansas State and Texas this week will say a lot about where this OU team stands.
5. Iowa State (10-7, 2-4 Big 12): The Cyclones appeared to have put struggles with inconsistency behind them, but they let a match point in the fourth frame and a lead late in the fifth set slip away at Texas Tech. Unless Iowa State can string together some ‘W’s, it will remain in the middle of the pack.
6. Texas Tech (15-4, 3-4 Big 12): The Lady Raiders’ come-from-behind win over the Cyclones showed a strong resolve, but they have yet to capture a win against a team from the top half of the Big 12.
7. West Virginia (12-8, 2-4 Big 12): West Virginia played just one match this week – a loss to Kansas. The Mountaineers would come in higher if their two conference wins were against stronger competition than Texas Tech and Texas Christian.
8. Texas Christian (12-9, 2-5 Big 12): The Horned Frogs were winless last week and look like they’ll remain at the bottom of the conference.
9. Baylor (11-10, 1-5 Big 12): The Bears could almost be 8b with the Horned Frogs, but five consecutive Big 12 losses and a lesser overall mark keep them in last place.
10. Oklahoma State (0-0, 0-0 Big 12): The OSU equestrian team fell in a 9-7 heartbreaker at No. 4 Baylor this week. But hey, it’s a long season.
