Basketball season is just around the bend and the preseason projections are starting to roll out.

The most recent projection to be released was the Associated Press [AP] poll, which ranks the nation’s top 25 teams.

Iowa State claimed the 14th spot in the AP rankings on the strength of three returning starters from last year’s Sweet 16 team in senior forward Dustin Hogue, junior forward Georges Niang and sophomore guard Monte Morris.

The additions of redshirt junior forward Jameel McKay and senior Bryce Dejean-Jones also likely factored in the AP’s decision to rank Iowa State in the top 15 before the season begins.

Three other Big 12 teams were represented in the initial top 25 rankings, including Kansas at No. 5, Texas at No. 10 and Oklahoma at No. 19.

The ISU men’s basketball team will take the court for the first time this season Nov. 7 against Viterbo in an exhibition game. The regular season begins Nov. 14 for the Cyclones when they host Oakland as part of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic.
