McGarvey: 10 people who didn’t use their degree

Whether you’re undecided or concerned about what you’re going to do with your major, below is a list of people who attended college and went on to do something different with their lives.

  1. Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs all dropped out of college to create Facebook, Microsoft and Apple, respectively.

  2. Rowan Atkinson, better known as Mr. Bean, graduated with an Electrical engineering degree from Newcastle University before receiving his master’s from Oxford.

  3. Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, became a surgeon because he believed medicine was the future.

  4. Ron Jeremy graduated from Queens College with a degree in education and theater. He then went on to receive his master’s in special education.

  5. Chuck Liddell, UFC fighter, graduated from California Polytechnic University with a degree in accounting before becoming a professional MMA fighter.

  6. Will Ferrell graduated from USC with a degree in sports information. (He must’ve used this knowledge in Semi-Pro.)

  7. J.K. Rowling, creator of Harry Potter, was convinced by her parents to study French instead of literature.

  8. Conan O’Brien graduated from Harvard University with a degree in history and American literature.

  9. Gerard Butler graduated from Glasgow University with a law degree.

  10. Lastly, James Franco graduated from UCLA with an English degree. He then went on to Columbia University to receive his master’s. Now, Franco is at Yale University attempting to earn his Ph.D. in English.

These people may be celebrities now, but there was a time when they were sitting at desks just like you and me. Persistence pays off, even if you are undecided.
