Power rankings: Big 12 volleyball
October 13, 2014
1. Texas (13-0, 5-0 Big 12): The Longhorns are one of just four remaining unbeaten NCAA Division I teams, and it doesn’t look like that will change soon.
2. Kansas State (16-2, 3-1): The Wildcats appear to be a legitimate top-25 team, but an Oct. 18 match against Texas will be a true measuring stick for this squad.
3. Iowa State (9-6, 2-3 Big 12): ISU coach Christy Johnson-Lynch called Oct. 12’s emotional win over Oklahoma a “turning point” for the Cyclones. With a few winnable games coming up, Iowa State could start making a push for a top two spot.
4. Oklahoma (12-5, 3-1 Big 12): The Sooners had five set points in the fourth set against Iowa State that could have sent the match to five sets, but they weren’t able to capitalize. Their spot in the rankings suffers because of it.
5. Kansas (13-5, 1-3 Big 12): The Jayhawks finally picked up a Big 12 win, but it came in four sets against Baylor. Time will tell if Kansas can turn things around.
6. Texas Tech (14-3, 2-3 Big 12): The Lady Raiders only played one match last week, a loss at Texas. There’s no shame in losing to the conference’s best team on their turf, so Texas Tech doesn’t move up or down.
7. West Virginia (12-7, 2-3 Big 12): The Mountaineers’ only win last week came against Texas Christian in five sets. It’s not enough to impress, but it is enough to bump them ahead of the Horned Frogs.
8. Texas Christian (12-7, 2-3 Big 12): The Horned Frogs have alternated wins and losses in Big 12 play, but things don’t look promising moving forward.
9. Baylor (10-9, 1-4 Big 12): Four straight conference losses keep the Bears in last place, where they look to remain for the time being.
10. Oklahoma State (0-0, 0-0 Big 12): No amount of game-changing kickoff returns from Tyreek Hill CQ could keep the Cowgirls stay out of last place.
