Big 12 football power rankings
October 23, 2014
1. No. 11 Kansas State (5-1, 3-0 Big 12)
Any team that goes into Norman and comes out with a victory deserves a bump in the rankings, especially if that team doesn’t surrender any turnovers and the best team in the conference falls in the same day.The Wildcats are rolling right now.
2. No. 10 TCU (5-1, 2-1 Big 12)
TCU bounced back in a big way against Oklahoma State after dropping a ridiculously high-scoring affair to Baylor in week five. Quarterback Trevone Boykin is third in the conference right now with 312.2 passing yards per game.
3. West Virginia (5-2, 3-1 Big 12)
Aside from having the best name in the conference, West Virginia quarterback Clint Trickett is making a case for being the best quarterback as well. He leads the Big 12 in yards (2,525) and yards per game (360.7). The next closest is Texas Tech’s Davis Webb with 319.9 yards per game.
4. Baylor ( 6-1, 3-1 Big 12)
Not a good week to be a Kansas fan. Baylor is fresh off their first loss of the season, a 41-27 upset at the hands of West Virginia, and the highest scoring offense welcomes the 79th ranked defense to Waco.
5. Oklahoma (5-2, 2-2 Big 12)
The Sooners get a much needed break this weekend before heading to Ames Nov. 1. Oklahoma has lost two of their last three and have dropped to No. 17 in the AP top 25 after reaching No. 4 in week five.
6. Oklahoma State (5-2, 3-1 Big 12)
The Cowboys endured quite the shellacking from TCU this past weekend, dropping their first Big 12 contest 42-9. Oklahoma State is out of the top 25 this week and with West Virginia looming on Oct. 25, they might drop even further.
7. Texas (3-4, 2-2 Big 12)
The Texas defense, who boasted the No. 3 passing defense in the country prior to playing Iowa State, struggled to find their footing against ISU quarterback Sam Richardson who threw for 345 yards against them. Their next challenge, Kansas State quarterback Jake Waters, might test them more.
8. Texas Tech (3-4, 1-3 Big 12)
Texas Tech got their first win in the Big 12 this past weekend against Kansas, but its real bright spot might be quarterback Davis Webb, who is averaging 330.4 yards per game.
9. Iowa State (2-5, 0-4 Big 12)
Again, Iowa State went into a game against the odds, played close and lost. One can wonder how much more the Cyclones can endure, but past scores indicate it won’t give Oklahoma an easy game on Oct. 25.
10. Kansas (2-5, 0-4 Big 12)
The backend of Kansas’ schedule could not be worse. Trips to Baylor, Oklahoma and Kansas State all await Kansas, as does a visit from TCU. A showdown with Iowa State Nov. 8 might be Kansas’ last shot at a conference victory.
