Michael Phelps receives second DUI
October 2, 2014
Tuesday morning in Maryland, Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps was arrested for a DUI. Phelps was charged for driving under the influence, crossing double lane lines, and driving with excessive speed.
This is not Phelps’ first time having a run in with the law. Back in 2004 Phelps was arrested for a DUI and pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months’ probation. Phelps issued an apology on his twitter account and mentions how serious his actions have recently been. According to a report with CNN, USA Swimming issued a statement Tuesday afternoon.
“The news regarding Michael Phelps and his actions are disappointing and unquestionable serious. We expect our athletes to conduct themselves responsibly in and out of the pool.”
When Phelps was first arrested he was suspended from swimming. Phelps continues to be a world icon and is the most decorated Olympian in the history of the Olympics. Winning 22 Olympic medals, it is no shock that Phelps is considered one of the best athletes of all time.
However, just like the statement from CNN said, athletes should be able to act accordingly whether they are in or out of their athletic environment.
