N.W.A. biopic update
October 29, 2014
If you haven’t already heard, the late 80’s early 90’s rap group N.W.A is currently filming a Biopic about the life of the rap group and their come up. The rap group has been called controversial, inspiring and even prolific, and it’s high time they had a movie about their landmark career in the music industry. After multiple setbacks over the years, the biopic is set to release on August 14, 2015. Paul Giamatti was recently cast to play the ruthless manager of the group, Jerry Heller. Other than that, here’s a quick update on what we know so far moving forward.
Director: F. Gary Gray has been tasked with directing this monumental film project, and is quite possibly the perfect man to do it. Although he’s from the East Coast instead of the West, he is certainly no stranger to the West Coast artists or the rap game in general. Gray has directed films with Ice Cube, Cypress Hill, R. Kelly and even Outkast. He’s also directed big name hits such as “The Italian Job” and “Law Abiding Citizen.”
Dr. Dre: Corey Hawkins is taking on the massive role of Dr. Dre, which could serve as his big break. Hawkins attended Juilliard and has recently moved his way up into films like “Iron Man 3” and “Non-Stop” with Liam Neeson.
Ice Cube: This casting must have been a no-brainer for the crew, since Ice Cube has a son that looks just like him. O’Shea Jackson Jr. is Cube’s 25-year-old son and will have the distinct honor to portray his dad at a pivotal point in his life.
Eazy-E: Jason Mitchell is much like Corey Hawkins in that they are just now getting into big name projects. Mitchell’s latest have been “Contraband” with Mark Wahlberg where he played a very small role, and “Broken City” again with Mark Wahlberg in a small role. We’ll see if his portrayal of deceased rap icon Eazy-E can make him big.
MC Ren: Playing MC Ren is a face you might actually recognize. Aldis Hodge had a big role in the TNT show “Leverage” from 2008 to 2012. His character was known to be witty, fiery and rebellious, so hopefully that can transition over into his portrayal of MC Ren’s contributions to N.W.A.
Dj Yella: Neil Brown Jr. is a 34-year-old actor and martial artist from Orlando, Florida. That makes his role in “Never Back Down” make a lot more sense, and he’s also been in the fourth installment of the “Fast and Furious” franchise as well as Battle Los Angeles. Personally, I think it will take a bit of work to make him look like Yella, but it’s Hollywood and I don’t think they’d make that casting choice without knowing they could make it happen.
Arabian Prince: Prince will not get a big part in the movie, seeing as he left the group shortly after it came to prominence, but he is still a part of their story. Due to his small role in the film, he will be played by Brandon Lafourche, a small-name actor.
