Water main breaks on Lincoln Way

A 12-inch water main break has resulted in the loss of approximately 1 million gallons of water on Lincoln Way.

According to a press release from the city of Ames, the water main break was discovered June 17 at around 5 a.m. at the intersection of Lincoln Way and Ash Avenue.

Lincoln Way has been blocked off from Beach Avenue to Lynn Avenue. The city hopes to have the street open by 5 p.m. the same day.

In addition to the 1 million gallons lost, the break is also causing rusty water to appear in other parts of the city.

Rusty water is safe to drink. Residents need to run cold tap water to verify clarity and should avoid the use of hot water in dishwashing and laundry if discoloration is noticed.

Outdoor watering and other uses of exterior hose outlets can assist in flushing out rust.

The city is offering free rust remover at City Hall, the water plant and all fire stations. Rust remover can also be provided by calling 515-239-5550 during business hours, or 515-239-5150 after 3 p.m.
