On the corner of 6th and Hazel Avenue engine number 7906 caught fire in Ames the afternoon of Feb. 12.

Doug Allen, commander for the Ames Fire Department, said they do not know how the fire started.

“We just got a call for this engine on fire,” Allen said. “It’s something in the electrical-generator side of it; we don’t know.”

Hazel Avenue was blocked off between 4th Street and 6th Street. Allen said the train company was sending officials to assess the damage. Minimal smoke was emanating from the engine of the train.

“I don’t think it’s going to get any more interesting than this,” Allen said.
