The ISU wrestling team defeated Rutgers 22-13 on Friday night at Hilton Coliseum.

All-American Kyven Gadson scored a 14-6 major decision for the Cyclones (7-2,1-1) to start things off, but the four-point lead was short lived, as Quean Smith found himself pinned in his heavyweight bout with No. 17 Billy Smith.

Kyle Larson and Shayden Terukina boosted the Cyclones to a 10-6 lead after both grapplers won their matches by 3-2 decisions. Rutgers (9-3, 6-0) kept things close, though, with a major decision victory against Iowa State’s Gabe Moreno at 141 pounds, putting the score at 10-10.

The two teams went back and forth again as Luke Goettl won a 6-5 decision at 149 pounds and Rutgers’ Anthony Perrotti beat Logan Molina in a 5-4 decision. With All-American Michael Moreno up at 165 pounds and the dual tied at 13-13, Iowa State began to pull away.

Moreno took an 11-5 decision followed by another decision victory by Tanner Weatherman at 174 pounds. Boaz Beard sealed the victory for Iowa State in the final match of the night by defeating Dan Seidenberg with a score of 6-2.

Iowa State’s next competition is against No. 4 Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. Jan. 24 at Stillwater, Okla.
