Cyclone Hockey dominates in sweep of No. 12 Arizona

It was a winning weekend for Cyclone Hockey in its first of three road series in the next week.

The No. 4 rated Cyclones (18-3-1) were dominant in their first series under interim head coach Jason Fairman, picking up wins by the scores of 3-0 and 5-0 against the No. 12 Arizona Wildcats.

On Friday night, Nov. 22, Iowa State got the scoring going in the first period when a Matt Bennett shot was deflected by Alex Grupe and put into the back of the net by Austin Parle.

The Cyclones would not score again until the second period when a familiar face struck again for Iowa State. During a shorthanded opportunity Chris Cucullu was able to break away from the defense but his shot was saved then sent to the back of the net by the Jon Feavel.

The third period was relatively uneventful until Feavel struck again off of a pass from Jake Bruhn and Eero Helanto to give the Cyclones the 3-0 lead and the series-opening win.

Matt Cooper picked up the win in net for the Cyclones, as he was able to save 34-of-34 shots on goal.

Iowa State was just as dominant on Saturday night on their way to a 5-0 win and the sweep.

The Cyclones got the scoring just under two minutes into the first period when Bruhn put the puck into the back of the net off the pass from Feavel giving Iowa State the 1-0 lead.

Feavel struck again in the first period when a shot by Cory Sellers was deflected right to Feavel who netted the puck for his third goal of the series. The goal gave Iowa State a 2-0 lead heading to the second period.

In the second period it was Scott Antonsen who got into the scoring column when he received a pass from line-mate Nate Percy and scored the puck giving Iowa State the 3-0 lead.

Just five minutes later, Percy fired a pass up the ice to Antti Helanto whose shot was blocked, only to be scored by Chase Rey allowing Iowa State to take the 4-0 lead.

The Cyclones rounded out the scoring when Bruhn struck again for the Cyclones with just 15 seconds left after some sweet skating moves on a breakaway gave him the opportunity to give the Cyclones the 5-0 lead and the win.

Cooper once again picked up the win between the pipes for the Cyclones saving 40 out of 40 shots on goal.

Cyclone Hockey’s next action will be Monday and Tuesday against the No. 1 Arizona State Sun Devils in Tempe, Ariz.
