Iowa State athletics has hired Martin Smith as the next director and head coach of track and field and cross country programs. Smith, a five-time national champion coach, will take over eight days after former ISU coach Corey Ihmels left for Boise State.
Smith has spent the last seven years at Oklahoma and won the 2007 Big 12 Championship there. He has twice been named Big 12 Coach of the Year.
Before Smith’s tenure with the Sooners, he spent time with Oregon, Wisconsin, Virginia and George Mason. Smith won two national titles while at Virginia and also notched two NCAA Championships while with the Badgers.
Throughout Smith’s 35-year career, he has won 25 conference championships in three different conferences, while coaching nearly 300 All-Americans.
