The ISU men’s golf team is building a competitive program under third-year coaches Andrew Tank and Patrick Datz. In 2012, just their second year, the coaches took the team to their first NCAA Regional since 1999.

Using 2012-13 as a rebuilding year after losing Nate McCoy — one of the best golfers in school history — the golf team is poised for another successful year in 2013-14. All players will be returning, plus a few new additions with no graduating seniors on last season’s roster.

The young team featured one freshman, three sophomores and two juniors, and finished in the top-five on three different occasions. The team peaked at the Bridgestone Collegiate, finishing third out of 17 teams.

The team will return rising star Scott Fernandez, who recorded one of the best seasons in Cyclone history his sophomore year. He finished with eight top-10 finishes in nine tournaments, while also winning the Furman Invitational.

The team’s season is split with about half of meets in the fall and half in the spring. The team usually plays 10-12 meets in the regular season, depending on scheduling.

Meets are most often played in fair-weather locations with the exception of a few, such as the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City. Cyclone fans are welcome to attend any meet.
