The No. 11 ISU hockey team fell short of upsetting No. 2 Arizona State. The Sun Devils beat the Cyclones 4-3 in overtime.

The Cyclones (6-1-1-0) started quickly with a power play goal just 6:10 into the first period by ISU forward James Buttermore to take a 1-0 lead.

After a scrum after the whistle behind the ISU net at 9:48 into the first period that ended up with both teams skating with four players each, ISU forward Derek Kohles capitalized 13:47 into the first period to give the Cyclones the 2-0 lead.

The Sun Devils didn’t stay down for long, however. At the 15:21 mark, the Sun Devils capitalized six seconds into a power play to bring the game within one and again at full strength less than a minute later to tie it at two apiece.

The Sun Devil struck first early in the second period to take a 3-2 lead but ISU forward J.P. Kascsak scored the equalizer on an unassisted wrap around 13:35 into the second period to tie things up once again at 3.

After a scoreless third period, the Cyclones started the overtime period on a four-on-three penalty kill. The Cyclones were able to kill off the penalty, but it didn’t stop ASU defenseman from scoring the game winner 5:33 into the overtime period.

The Cyclones return to the ice Saturday night for game two against the Sun Devils at 7:30 at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.
