Third-floor renovations planned for Lied Recreation Center
July 27, 2012
Iowa State will be hosting the Big 12 Conference in January and February. For this reason, renovations will begin shortly on the third floor of Lied Recreation Center.
With contingency funding from the State Gym Project, the third floor of Lied will be completely redone, including new weight and cardio equipment. The southeast curtain wall above the east entrance adjacent to the soccer complex will also be redone.
The track in Lied will be replaced in September, Giles said. It will most likely be closed the first few weeks of the semester.
During the first month of State Gym being open, more than 70,000 card swipes were recorded. An overall increase in gym usage was also reported, including at Lied.
State Gym was initially estimated to cost approximately $52 million and was budgeted at $54 million, Giles said. It was completed at a cost of $46 million with $51 million in funds actually borrowed. $1.1 million of the leftover funds will be used for the Lied Recreation renovation.
