Williams’ walk off homer leads Cyclones to victory over Kansas 3-2 in extra innings

Following their 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Drake Bulldogs on Wednesday, Iowa State beat the Kansas Jayhawks 3-2 on Friday thanks to a walk-off home run by junior shortstop Sami Williams in a two extra-inning game.

The Cyclones improve to 29-22 (5-11 Big 12), and the Jayhawks fall to 15-33 (3-13 Big 12) this season.

Senior Emma Hylen made the start for Iowa State in the pitcher’s circle. She pitched six and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs off six hits, had two strikeouts and earned a no-decision.

In the top of the seventh inning, senior Savannah Sanders came into the game for Hylen. Sanders pitched two and a third innings allowing no runs, one hits and she had two strikeouts. Sanders earned the win in the circle and improved her record to 4-8 this season.

Kansas took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Becki Monaghan scored off of an RBI single by Miranda Rodriguez.

Senior catcher Kaylee Bosworth tied the game for Iowa State in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI double as senior center fielder Taylor Nearad scored.

The Jayhawks recaptured the lead in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a Morgyn Wynne RBI double.

Bosworth tied the game up once again in the bottom of fifth this time with an RBI single, Williams scored the run.

Neither team was able to score the game winning run in the seventh inning and the game then went to extra innings.

In the bottom of the ninth, Williams crushed a solo home run to right field and the Cyclones won 3-2.

Iowa State and Kansas will finish their series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Cyclones Sports Complex.
