ISU state exhibit gives young audience education experience

The ISU fair exhibit will kick off on Aug. 11 on Main Street at the Varied Industries Building where visitors can take part in many events and activities.

According to University Marketing Director Carole Custer, there was contribution from multiple units on campus.

“We have different areas and departments helping us,” Custer said.

The theme of this year’s state fair is “From Biorenewables to Main Street, Iowa State is Making Your Life Better.”

There will be several displays for guests to see. One of the displays will be a farmers’ market that will demonstrate how Iowa State helps producers expand their crop growing seasons.

There are expected to be over 60 contests to compete in. There will be new contests this year such as the Battle of the Butter, a contest that celebrates the 100th birthday of the Butter Cow.

The 4-H will be holding be holding 3800 exhibits at the fair.

“The exhibits will range from photography, woodworking, fashion, and home improvement,” said Shelly Greving, marketing director of 4-H.

There will be many work exhibits lead by youth leaders. The activites will be a way for the general public to see what skills the young students have learned at 4-H.

“They’re showing not just cooking or woodworking skills,” Greving said.

“They’re also showing their learning, communication, and leadership skills.”

4-H will recognize scholar recipients from Iowa State on Aug. 20.

“We give out more than 100,000 dollars in scholarships,” Greving said.

There will also be a Hall of Fame event to recognize all those who have been dedicated volunteers to 4-H.

“We really pride ourselves in the 4-H program,” Greving said.
