PHILADELPHIA — Jon Reader was the only ISU wrestler to stay alive in the championship bracket for the second day of the NCAA Championships.

Reader, who is ranked No. 1 at 174 pounds, breezed through his two matches to reach the quarterfinals.

“I’m just wrestling,” said Reader, who is now 36-0 on the season. “I’m just trying to score points and wrestle for seven minutes.”

On his way to the quarterfinals, Reader recorded two major decisions with combined riding time of 9:54.

Jerome Ward was the other ISU wrestler to win his first-round bout at 197 pounds, squeaking by in a close 4-3 victory over Ohio’s Erik Schuth.

However, Ward fell to Penn’s Micah Burak, the No. 6 seed, in a 2-1 decision to fall to the wrestlebacks.

Ward, who appeared fatigued at multiple points during the second-round match, declined comment afterward.

Senior Chris Drouin was the first ISU wrestler to take the mat at the event, but his debut as a Cyclone at the NCAAs was a short one.

Drouin, who transferred to Iowa State from Arizona State this season, was pinned in his first-round match at 141 pounds by Cole Von Ohlen of the Air Force Academy in 2:20.

He was then knocked to the wrestlebacks, where he would live to see another day after defeating former All-American Cody Cleveland of Chattanooga, 7-3.

Cole Shafer was the only wrestler to be eliminated from the tournament, losing both his two matches by major decisions.

Kyle Simonson survived at heavyweight, defeating Ohio’s Jeremy Johnson in a 3-0 decision after losing his second match to Iowa’s Blake Rasing.

Friday will contain matches in Sessions III and IV.
