The men and women of the Cyclone track and field teams completed a busy weekend of competition that saw the team split up to compete at three separate competitions in two different states.

Competition began for the Cyclones at the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kan., as well as at the Mount Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif.

The Kansas Relays lasted Thursday through Saturday. The competition yielded great results for the sprinters that attended, as they were able to record a top-three finish in all events in which they competed.

Senior Lashawn Wright blazed her way to a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.81 seconds for the Cyclones. Wright was joined at the second-place position on the podium by the women’s 4×400 meter relay team.

The relay team finished in a time of 3:47.43, just behind the relay team from Wartburg College.

Another second-place finish came back to Ames courtesy of the efforts of sophomore sprinter Kianna Elahi in the 400-meter dash. Freshman Donnise Powell finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles and junior Jenna Caffrey placed third in the 100-meter hurdles.

The women sprinters weren’t the only ones to have success in Lawrence, as Iowa State’s 4×400 meter relay team placed third in 3:13.55, while the 4×100 meter relay team placed fifth.

The throwers that competed in Lawrence were lead by redshirt junior Josh Koglin on the men’s side who finished fourth in the men’s hammer throw competition. Sophomores Zach Richards and Mike Zika finished fifth and eighth.

The women throwers that competed in the hammer throw were led by junior Britta Christofferson.

The Hamlin native threw 175-11 to lead the women at the Kansas Relays. Sophomores Laishema Hampton and Danielle Frere rounded out competition for the ISU women in the event as they finished 12th and 13th.

While the sprinters were experiencing substantial success at the Kansas Relays, the distance runners competed at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif.

On the men’s side, junior Hillary Bor captured one of the two victories of the weekend for the Cyclones in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

The final competition of the weekend for the Cyclones took place in Cerritos, Calif., at the Beach Invitational. Senior Brandon Rooney added to the win column as he took first place in the 1,500-meter run with his time of 3:47.20.

Iowa State will compete primarily at the Drake Relays this upcoming weekend, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

This weekend’s Drake Relays will mark the 101st running of the outdoor track and field event that has been held annually by Drake University since 1910.

One of the most prestigious outdoor track and field events will draw a diverse group of competitors to Drake Stadium along with the Cyclone men and women.

The event will consist of competition among high school collegiate and professional athletes, as well as Olympians. The Drake Relays will take place Thursday through Saturday.
