HOCKEY: Cyclones fall in defensive battle to Ohio
February 5, 2010
The Iowa State hockey team traveled to Ohio University on Friday in hopes of continuing its recent momentum. By the end of a defensively-centered game, Iowa State failed to upset the third ranked Bobcats, losing by a score of 1-0.
In the first period, both teams could not capitalize on what few opportunities were given. The period ended in a 0-0 tie with Iowa State goalie Erik Hudson saving all eight of the Bobcats shots.
In the second, Iowa State kept the pressure up forcing Ohio to play defense the whole period. Iowa State forward Mike Lebler found the back of the net on a power play halfway through the period, but the shot was waved off due to a whistle. A couple of penalties and penalty kills later, the period ended still tied. The Cyclones only allowed Ohio seven shots in the period and Hudson turned them all away.
Ohio came out strong in the third and put up a goal just a couple minutes into the period. The goal would turn out to be the game-winner as Iowa State could not answer. In the last minute of the game, the Cyclones had a chance to answer back after Ohio received a penalty. Iowa State pulled its goalie to get the six on four advantage, but was unable to score.
The Cyclones will face off with Ohio again on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m.
