Two all-around strong showings in two games led to a 5-2 and 7-2 victory for the Iowa State Cyclones over Georgia Tech on Saturday.

In both games combined, the Cyclones scored 12 runs off of 23 hits.

“We’ve been capable of doing this all year,” said coach Jamie Pinkerton. “We got on a roll.”

The Cyclones had 14 more hits than the Yellow Jackets in both games.

“We knew the scouting report well; we are very intentional in our hitting in practice, and it showed today,” said junior shortstop Sami Williams.

In game one, Iowa State got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning as senior catcher Kaylee Bosworth hit an RBI double and Williams came around to score, giving the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.

Early in the game, Georgia Tech put Iowa State in some tough spots defensively, but the Cyclones were able to get out of them.

“Mental preparation got us out of those situations,” said center fielder Taylor Nearad.

The Cyclones strung some hits together and scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning off of RBI singles by Bosworth and senior first baseman Sally Woolpert and an RBI sacrifice fly by freshman second baseman Kasey Simpson to give Iowa State a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Yellow Jackets scored their first run of the game off of a Tricia Awald RBI double to trim the Cyclone lead to three.

Williams added to Iowa State’s lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run to center field to give the Cyclones a 5-1.

Senior Emma Hylen was the pitcher for the Cyclones in the first game, and she went five and two-thirds innings, struck out five batters and allowed one run off four hits. With this win, Hylen improves her record to 10-5 this season.

Georgia Tech was able to score one more run off of an error by Iowa State, but the Cyclones held on to win 5-2.

In game two, the Cyclones scored early once again as Williams scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to give Iowa State an early 1-0 lead.

The Cyclones added another run in the bottom of the second inning as junior designated player Hannah Carter hit an RBI double, and right fielder Sydney Stites scored.

Iowa State’s kept on scoring in the bottom of the third inning as RBI singles by Bosworth and Stites gave the Cyclones a 4-0 lead.

Georgia Tech cut the deficit to two runs in the top of the fourth inning off a two-RBI single by Cameron Stanford.

In the bottom of the fourth Sami Williams hit her second solo home run of the day, which gave the Cyclones a 5-2 lead.

The final two runs of the game came off of an RBI double by Bosworth and an RBI single by Woolpert.

Savannah Sanders was in the pitcher’s circle in the second game for the Cyclones. She pitched a complete game, had four strikeouts and allowed one earned run en route to her second win this season.

The Cyclones improve to 21-15 (1-5 Big 12) while Yellow Jackets fall to 23-18 (5-7 ACC).

Iowa State and Georgia Tech will face each other once more at noon Sunday at Cyclone Sports Complex.
