The ISU women’s basketball team picked up its first loss of the season Saturday but responded Sunday with a 87-71 win over San Diego State in their final game of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic.

The Cyclones (5-1), after shooting 30 percent Saturday, bounced back to shoot almost 54 percent and hit 10 three-pointers in the game. The Aztecs shot 41 percent and also hit 10 treys but Iowa State won the rebounding battle 35-25.

Heather Ezell hit five of those threes and scored a team-high 21 points and handed out seven assists. Alison Lacey scored 17 points, all of which came in the second half, and also had six rebounds and six assists.

Nicky Wieben was also in double figures with 11 points and Amanda Nisleit, Kelsey Bolte and Jocelyn Anderson all had eight points, as all 11 Cyclone players that saw minutes scored.

Iowa State trailed 20-16 halfway through the first half but promptly went on an 18-3 run over the next minutes, with Ezell hitting three of her treys during that run.

The Cyclones led 43-35 at halftime and scored the first ten points of the second half to take an 18-point lead. San Diego State scored the next nine points to cut the lead to nine, but that was as close as Iowa State would let them, keeping them at arm’s length the rest of the way by hitting their free throws down the stretch.

Jene Morris had 34 points for the Aztecs.
