MBB: Cyclones let one slip away at Hawaii
November 25, 2008
The ISU men’s basketball team held a 7-point lead with just over two minutes left but that’s when things started to go terribly wrong.
Hawaii’s 60-59 win in Honolulu pushed Iowa State into the loss column for the first time this season.
The Warriors used a 9-1 run in the final minutes to pick up their second win of the season despite being down by as many as 13 points in the second half.
Iowa State’s Craig Brackins hit one of two free throws with 2.6 seconds remaining to give Iowa State a 59-58 lead, but then on the inbounds pass, Brackins fouled Hawaii’s Bill Amis at half court only 0.2 seconds after Iowa State had taken the lead.
Amis made both of his foul shots and Diante Garrett’s last effort full-court 3-pointer went left and Hawaii escaped with a 60-59 win.
Iowa State came flat in the first half, scoring only 22 points and shooting just 29 percent from the field. The defense, though, kept the score close as the Cyclones trailed only 25-22 at the half.
The Cyclones next used an 8-0 run to take a commanding 58-51 lead going into the final two minutes of play. That’s when everything fell apart for the Cyclones and Hawaii scored 9 of the final 10 points of the game to upset Iowa State at home.
Diante Garrett scored a career-high 26 points and went 10-of-10 from the foul line. The only other Cyclone to sniff double figures was Craig Brackins with 10 points.
Once again, the Cyclone were out-rebounded; the Warriors held a 35-29 advantage on the glass.
Iowa State (3-1) returns home Saturday to take on Mississippi Valley State (0-6) at 12:30 p.m.
