Every Cyclone sees the ice in sweep

Cyclone Hockey improved its record to 5-1, as they beat the Jayhawks 10-5 on Friday night, and then held on for a 3-2 victory Saturday.

Friday night’s game was an offensive explosion. Cyclone Hockey scored a season high in goals, including Derek Behrman’s second hat trick of the season, while Mike Murtaugh added two. The other six goals were scored by six different players.

Saturday’s game had a completely different feel. Junior defenseman Brent Cornelius felt the energy level was the difference between the two games.

“I think we came out a little bit harder on Friday night than Saturday night,” Cornelius said. “On Saturday I think we thought that we could just come out and skate around and somehow find a way to win no matter what; in the third period we did a good job of fighting back. That shows how much diversity our teams has.”

ISU goalie Jim Stenson got the start Saturday night in place of sophomore Erik Hudson. Stenson allowed only two goals, despite seeing limited playing time so far this season.

Even with the sweep, there are some things the team agrees they still need to work on.

“The better our goaltending is, the better our shooting is going to be. I think both are starting to improve, as we get stronger. I think we needed to do a better job on face-offs and cycling the puck in the offensive zone,” said coach Al Murdoch.

The Cyclones did, however, do a good job of using their physicality against the Jayhawks, wearing them down in the third period of game two.

“We were pretty physical,” Murdoch said. “We need to be, as we get into these bigger games.”

Iowa State out-shot KU 58-19 Saturday and had a significant shot advantage on Friday night as well. On Friday, the team took advantage of the rebounds and put them in, something they lost track of Saturday.

“We need to know where the rebounds are,” Cornelius said. “We had about 1 million rebounds [on Saturday] and we didn’t put them in. We also need to focus on giving 100 percent on every shift the whole game.”

With the exception of one player being out sick, every player on the roster saw playing time this weekend and some new contributors stood out for the Cyclones. Sophomore forward Jordan Pascale scored his first goal of the season on Friday night, in a flurry of goals, while freshman defenseman Brody Toigo showed he can stand up for his teammates, drawing a fighting penalty at the beginning of the third period, which led to his ejection.

“It’s good to see people contribute in other ways as well, besides scoring. We had some guys play some good defense and get the puck out of the zone, helping get it down the ice.  Stenson getting the win for us Friday night was huge as well,” Cornelius said.

The Cyclones’ next game is against St. Louis University this weekend in Ames. The games are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
