New ice cream store opens on Welch Ave.

The Dairy Queen at 117 Welch Ave. has been replaced by Mochi, a restaurant that serves mochi ice cream – balls of ice cream surrounded by a dough made from sticky rice.
Mochi’s menu, like Dairy Queen’s, includes a variety of burger combo meals among other foods. The difference is in the treats; the flavored ice cream and sticky-rice dough at Mochi is a stark contrast to the vanilla soft serve and sumptuous toppings in Dairy Queen’s blizzards and sundaes.
“We have fresh-made premium ice cream with some interesting flavors like mango, coconut, pina colada, peach and cheesecake,” said Cheng Kuan, assistant manager of Mochi. “There is some pretty new stuff in here.”
Mochi also sells black and green tea-flavored ice cream, which are their two original flavors. The Pearl Tapioca pudding is another one of Mochi’s specialties.
Will Emerson, senior in mechanical engineering, didn’t seem to mind the switch.
“This is the only place along Welch that I know of where you can go to get a good burger,” he said.
Emerson also said the place really doesn’t seem a whole lot different to him.
“The food selection is pretty much the same. I like the tapioca stuff [and] I think it’s pretty equal to the Dairy Queen,” he said.
“The fruit freezes are a nice change of pace though.”
