Candidates bickering intensifies in the last hours before caucuses

Former Gov. Mike Huckabee, R-Ark., and his closest competitor, former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., have turned into the 2008 Iowa Caucus version of Cane and Abel. Both have been continuously lashing out in the other as the event has drawn nearer with the most recent of those lash outs coming from Romney’s mouth.

Huckabee was criticized by Romney for flying to Los Angeles to make an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night, the night before the Caucus. Romney claimed Huckabee must not care about the Iowan’s vote as much as he did, since he remained in the state on the campaign trail all last night.

The ex-Arkansas Governor returned to Iowa this morning and spoke at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. After his speech he spoke to reporters about Romney’s most recent criticisms saying that he wanted to reach out to all different types of audiences. In particular he wanted to reach students, who he says may tune into comedy and entertainment shows more often than hard-news networks.

Huckabee is slated to make an appearance on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart next week, prior to the New Hampshire Primaries.

As of one hour prior to the Iowa Caucus Huckabee and Romney are in statistical dead-heat with Huckabee at 29.7 percent and Romney at 26.7 percent.
