Iowa State softball played two games on Saturday that resulted in one win and one loss.

The Cyclones defeated Northern Colorado, 7-3, and lost to Grand Canyon University, 2-0.

After falling to the Bears 7-6 on Friday, the Cyclones got their revenge on Saturday with a 7-3 victory. Freshman pitcher Shannon Mortimer picked up her second victory of the weekend.

The Cyclones got off to a hot start in the top of the second inning with a two-RBI single courtesy of left-fielder Hannah Carter. Freshmen designated hitter Kasey Simpson and senior catcher Kaylee Bosworth scored.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Cyclones added to their lead with a two-run home run by junior Sami Williams; Carter also scored.

Bosworth hit an RBI double where senior Jackie Chairez scored, to give the Cyclones a 5-0 lead.

The Bears scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth to lessen their deficit. However, the Cyclones responded in the top of the seventh when Bosworth hit a two-RBI double.

Northern Colorado scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning but that wasn’t enough, and the Cyclones held on to win 7-3.

Following their matchup with the Bears, the Cyclones faced off against the Grand Canyon Antelopes.

Both defenses played well throughout most of the game as there were no runs scored in the first five and a half innings played.

Left fielder Madelyn Dowdle put the Antelopes on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Third baseman Sierra Smith extended Grand Canyon’s lead to two with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Cyclones got a runner on base in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Bosworth grounded into a double-play to end the game and give the Antelopes a 2-0 win over the Cyclones.

Iowa State will finish the Lopes Up Classic with the matchup against the South Dakota Coyotes at 11:00 a.m. Sunday.
