Benjamin named new interim dean of students

Mimi Benjamin has been named the interim dean of students, replacing current interim dean Sharon McGuire.

Benjamin will officially begin Sept. 8.

“The job entails supervising the staff in offices such as greek life and academic success center,” said Benjamin, who is currently the assistant to the vice president for student affairs.

There are 13 different departments the dean of students works closely with.

These departments include national student exchange, disability resources, the academic success center, recreation services and multicultural student affairs.

The dean of students deals with keeping initiatives going, money and personnel issues, among many other things, McGuire said.

The position also provides support and assistance to students and the university community.

Benjamin’s current position as assistant to the vice president of student affairs does not deal with students as much as her new one will.

“I am looking forward to having more direct interaction with students and staff,” Benjamin said.

The university is currently searching for a permanent dean of students, to be named later this fall.

When the new dean is appointed, Benjamin will return to her position as an assistant.

Benjamin has been with Iowa State since 1997 and has been at her current position since 2004.

“Mimi will do a good job, and I enjoyed my experience,” McGuire said.

McGuire is leaving to become the associate vice president for undergraduate study at Boise State University.

“I liked the variety of working with students one-on-one,” McGuire said. “I also liked working with other staff and administrators on campus.”
