Cold shooting doom Cyclones at Missouri

Costly turnovers and cold shooting spells were too much to overcome in Iowa State’s 67-59 loss at Missouri on Wednesday night. The Cyclones, led by Lyndsey Medders’ 22 points, split the regular-season series with the Tigers.

Missouri (20-6, 10-4 Big 12) ran out to a quick 12-2 lead with hot shooting from all over the floor. The Cyclones got two baskets from senior Brittany Wilkins before failing to score for more than five minutes. A rash of ISU turnovers and continued cold shooting woes allowed Missouri to pull ahead by as much as 15 twice late in the first half.

The Tigers, shooting 45.5 percent in the first half, got 12 points from Christelle N’Garsanet. Medders hit three jumpers over the final 2:38 to narrow Missouri’s lead to 32-21 at the break despite Iowa State’s 13 turnovers.

Missouri came out of the locker room without losing its shooting touch, pulling ahead by as much as 14.

Medders, who hit three triples to start the second half, and Wilkins combined to score 16 points over a five-minute span, pulling within six 46-40 with 10:32 on the clock.

Iowa State narrowed the gap to 48-46 on a 3-pointer by Megan Ronhovde, followed by a Medders 3-pointer. N’Garsanet, who led Missouri with 22 points, was sent to the bench at 8:22 after picking up her fourth foul. The Cyclones tied it up with a Lisa Bildeaux basket at 7:23.

Missouri went on an 11-0 run before Medders hit a layup at 3:29 to make the score 59-50. Iowa State used solid defense and rebounding to stop a pair of Tiger possessions and Nicky Wieben sank a 3-pointer to pull the Cyclones within four with 1:37 left. Missouri hit six free throws to seal the victory.

Iowa State outrebounded the Tigers 36-35, but committed 18 turnovers. Wilkins finished with 15 points.
