Alliger spearheading tuition stabilization, student involvement
February 28, 2006
One Government of the Student Body presidential candidate is trying to secure the seat a second time – this time with a different approach.
“Last year we focused on problems within the senate,” said Henry Alliger, senior in animal science. “The assumption we made last year, such as the things like entertainment for students, stabilizing tuition and getting students involved were expectations, not a platform.”
Alliger is spearheading a new platform with Brooks Nelson, sophomore in public service and administration in agriculture. Alliger said the pair saw a need for greater student involvement and have chosen to base their platform on that approach.
“There is always more that can be done for students, and always more students can do,” Alliger said.
Nothing can be done without students, he said.
On the issue of stabilizing tuition, Alliger said students need to be a constant presence at the state Capitol. He said the pair proposes to do this by creating a statewide student association.
“Rising tuition is a statewide problem and should be treated as such,” he said.
A student organization such as this already exists and Alliger said he thinks it could be made more effective.
“The old association was a loose association, nothing professional, and the [future] one is going to be professional, structured and have a focused message,” Alliger said.
Alliger and Nelson said another key point in their campaign is the promise to provide more entertainment for students between the ages of 18 and 21. The two said they plan on talking to city government officials to achieve this goal.
Ames City Planner Jeff Benson said most of Ames is zoned for such use but that the City Council doesn’t invest in private venues.
“If GSB wants to work in coordination with the city to create a venue, they would have to start with the City Council,” Benson said. “Currently, there is one student in the City Council and it would be through them that anything would start.”
Alliger has had involvement with the GSB Senate during the past five years. For four terms he was part of the senate and became the 2004-2005 speaker of the senate. He said he also owns and manages two agricultural-based companies, Alliger Cattle Company and Packer’s Pit LLC.
Nelson is the Interfraternity Council senator on GSB.
