An overflowing crowd at Sigma Kappa sorority paid respects to Kelly Laughery, the ISU student who was killed in a hit-and-run accident early Saturday morning on Mortensen Road.

Kelly-green ribbons, Laughery’s favorite color, were handed out to all those who came through the door, greeted with music and a slideshow in her honor.

Lisa Wetzel, president of the ISU chapter of Sigma Kappa, 233 Gray Ave., said they held the open house for all those who had been touched by her.

“She just had a way with people,” said Wetzel, senior in elementary education. “She just knew how to live life.”

The funeral for Laughery, 20, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 424 Scott St., in Fontannelle. The sorority has chartered a bus to go to the funeral, and members are staying in residents’ homes who, Wetzel said, have “really opened their doors to them.”

Visitation will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Steen Funeral Home, 525 Maple St., and then from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Lutheran church.

Marianne Ring, sophomore in marketing, said Laughery was the kind of person who listened when no one else would and made her laugh when she was crying.

“Every memory was the best memory,” she said.

The investigation into Laughery’s death has gotten a new lead.

The vehicle believed to be involved in the fatal hit and run has been located by ISU Police.

According to an ISU Police news release, police were notified Sunday of the location of a car matching the description of the vehicle believed to be involved in the incident. At 6:30 p.m. Sunday, police executed a search warrant and found a 1992 Buick Century with damage to the front consistent with evidence found at the accident scene.

ISU Police Capt. Gene Deisinger declined to release where the vehicle had been found.

He said police are not prepared to publicly identify the driver at this time and have not made any decisions on what charges, if any, would be filed.

“That decision about charges will continue to be evaluated as we investigate the case,” he said.

He said factors contributing to the accident have also not been determined, and a report has not yet been made by the medical examiner’s office.

The investigation continues, and ISU Police request that anyone with any information regarding the accident contact them immediately at (515) 294-4428.
