March is Women’s History Month, and on Iowa State’s campus, organizations such as the Workspace at the Memorial Union are hosting events to celebrate and pay homage to women. Tuesday night, the Workspace held a feminist cross stitch workshop in its space where people from Iowa State’s campus as well as the Ames community could learn to cross stitch from an instructor with the theme of the cross stitch patterns being feminism.

Some of the slogans on the cross stitch patterns said things such as, “a woman’s place is in the revolution,” “smash the patriarchy,” “nasty woman,” and “nevertheless, she persisted.”

Those who attended were able to choose a design featuring feminist quotes, learn to read and follow the pattern, get the hang of working with a needle and thread, and leave with all of the supplies and knowledge to finish the project on their own.

Cross stitching is a form of sewing that uses embroidery in x-shaped stitches to form a pattern. Some of the attendees of the event had cross stitched before, while most had not.

The Workspace is home to more than just cross stitching. The space also features areas where students and community members can participate in walk-in crafts, jewelry making, pottery, soap making, and much more.

This isn’t the first event the Workspace has held to celebrate Women’s History Month. Through the month, they also featured a ‘potty mouth pottery’ night, as well as a ‘resist and persist’ bracelet making walk-in craft.
