In career week, get knowledge, chance to win an Apple iPod

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has added a reward for students who participate in its new Career Week activities Wednesday through next Thursday. The incentive: a chance to win a Apple iPod.

“It’s only in college you can do stuff like this,” said Steven Kravinsky, LAS director of career placement. “We are putting up a series of workshops to help you prepare and providing opportunities.”

First, students must pick up a “passport” in LAS Career Services at 141 Catt Hall. To win, they must attend six or more events and get their passport stamped at each one. After six stamps, the passport can be returned to LAS Career Services by Feb. 25. The drawing and sessions are open to all students, and there is no sign-up required.

The 50-minute workshops, covering topics like mock interviews and resume writing, are intended to prepare students for the upcoming Business/LAS Spring Career Day from 1 to 7 p.m. next Wednesday at Hilton Coliseum.

Other sessions should be picked based on what students need. Students should attend the workshop that scares them the most — if something like resume writing makes someone nervous, then he or she probably needs to work on that skill, Kravinsky said.

More than 140 organizations and 2,350 students and recruiters are expected to attend the career day. “I think career week gets people in the mind set; they can get everything just right and have it all in their memory before the job fair,” said Kristen Lundquist, junior in liberal arts and sciences-open option.

Both Kravinsky and Gingery said students should attend all of the events, especially the career fair. “Career day is a giant networking cocktail party without the alcohol,” Kravinsky said. “Networking is the No. 1 way you’re going to find jobs.”

Students could make an impression on a company or representative at career day that could help them later, Gingery said.
