Jackson Vroman, a senior forward on the ISU men’s basketball team, was arrested in west Ames early Thursday morning and charged with drunken driving.

Vroman is suspended indefinitely from the Cyclone team until the charges are resolved, said ISU head coach Wayne Morgan.

Vroman was already suspended because of a May 24 incident in Spirit Lake where he was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

“I can’t fully express my disappointment in Jackson,” Morgan said in a statement Thursday. “Jackson has let down his teammates and supporters of our basketball program. He has jeopardized his future at Iowa State.”

ISU Police Capt. Gene Deisinger said officers saw a vehicle driving left of the center line near the intersection of Hayward Avenue and Mortensen Road at about 2 a.m. Officers gave Vroman a field sobriety test after his vehicle stopped at Mortensen Road and Coconino Road.

Deisinger said Vroman failed the test and was arrested about 2:20 a.m. Vroman refused to take a test to determine his blood-alcohol content.

The license plate on the vehicle Vroman was driving was expired, Deisinger said.

Vroman was also charged with driving on the wrong side of the street and driving without a vehicle registration.

After being processed, Vroman arrived at Story County Jail in Nevada at 4:05 a.m. and was released at 9:30 a.m. on his own recognizance, Story County Jail officials said.

“Players in our program are accountable for their actions and must face the consequences of their behavior,” Morgan said.

According to Iowa court records, Vroman had recently received a deferred judgment in the Spirit Lake case. Last week, Vroman pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana and received a one-year probation from the Dickinson County Attorney.

He was also required to complete a substance abuse program, 100 hours of community service and pay court costs by September 2004. The paraphernalia charge was dismissed except for court costs.

After the May incident, Morgan said, “Consistent with athletic department policy, Jackson Vroman is suspended indefinitely from the basketball team. Once the legal system has ruled on this situation, we will address it further. This type of behavior is unacceptable.”

Vroman was one of Iowa State’s top offensive players last year in his first season after transferring from Snow Community College in Ephraim, Utah. He averaged 12.5 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, starting all 31 contests for the Cyclones in a 17-14 season.

Iowa State starts the season with an exhibition matchup against the L.A. Stars on Nov. 3.
