Nebraska volleyball and basketball player Greichaly Cepero and Oklahoma football standout Josh Heupel have been named the Big 12
Conference Athletes of the Year.
The athletes are chosen by a panel of athletic administrators and media from each of the Big 12 school’s region.
Cepero led Nebraska to two national championships in volleyball during her career while leading the Cornhuskers in kills every match.
The Dorado, Puerto Rico native also lettered twice in basketball, starting 16 games while averaging 6.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
Heupel also had a storied college career, guiding the Sooners to a 13-0 record and a national championship win over football power Florida State.
Heupel was named the National Player of the Year by the Associated Press, Walter Camp, The Sporting News and CBS Sports. The Aberdeen, S.D. native also finished as the runner-up in the 2000 Heisman Trophy balloting.
Both Cepero and Heupel became the fifth athletes to be given the award by the Big 12 Conference.
Last year’s award winners were Erin Aldrich who starred at Texas in volleyball and track and field and Oklahoma State golfer Charles Howell.
Each of the teams in the Big 12 had one nomination for the award.
Nominated from Iowa State were track and field standout Gina Curtis on the women’s side and nationally known wrestler Cael Sanderson on the men’s side.
The selections were based upon athletic and academic performance with citizenship used as the tiebreaker.
