Love is in the air this Valentine’s Day. However, the acceptance of interracial relationships is sometimes shunned.ISU students interested in hearing different perspectives on interracial relationships or would like to discuss their own experiences are encouraged to attend a presentation on the topic, said Natalie Allen, event program coordinator for the Ames-ISU YWCA.The YWCA is sponsoring a special Valentine’s Day discussion of the issue at noon today in room 236 of the Memorial Union, said Allen, senior in child and family services.Lee Ann Davis, minority program coordinator for the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, will lead the discussion, which is titled “Should Love Triumph over Racial Differences?”The hour-long discussion will include short film clips from movies such as “Jungle Fever” and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” she said. “We also hope to talk about different obstacles in interracial relationships and what problems those people have experienced,” Davis said. She said she also plans to cover the topic of how interracial families are viewed in today’s society and look at the issues that bi-racial students face at Iowa State.”I hope to lead a very general discussion of the topic and open the forum up for questions from those individuals who attend to make this an interactive experience for everyone,” Davis said.
