Although most of the water in ponds, lakes or streams is frozen solid, people interested in the white-water sports of canoeing and kayaking are encouraged to take a few laps around the Beyer Hall pool Sunday morning. The ISU Canoe and Kayak Club is sponsoring a canoeing clinic from 9 a.m. until noon Sunday, said Cynthia Rullan, the club’s president. The clinic will be held under the direction of long-time paddlers Greg Vitale and Rick Dietz, said Rullan, junior in agronomy. The clinic is open to anyone who is interested in the sport and available at a cost of $5 for students and $10 for the general public. “The clinic’s purpose is to expose people to the basics of canoeing who have little or no knowledge of the sport,” said Vitale, a certified American Canoe Association instructor. “We plan to introduce people to the different parts of the canoe and show them different stroke techniques through a video presentation and then practice those strokes in the pool.”Rullan said she encourages anyone who is interested in the clinic to meet at the Beyer Hall pool Sunday morning but also said only six spots are still available for the clinic. “If anyone is interested in our organization but cannot join us on Sunday we hold regular meetings every Thursday and on Sundays during the winter season,” said Rullan. The meetings are Thursday night from 7 to 10 and Sunday mornings from 9 to noon and are held in the State Gym pool.
