While some ISU students are anticipating the warming temperatures of spring, the ISU Ski and Snowboard club doesn’t mind staying cool.”Our club is totally based on recreation and promoting the sport,” said Mike Will, the club’s co-president.While the group’s primary objective is to hang out and have fun on the slopes, it also has race teams for those members who like a little more competition. “We currently have a 14-member ski team and three women who compete in the snowboard competitions,” said Erin Orr, the club’s vice president and a member of the snowboard team. The snowboarding trio has had great success this season and are only one step away from qualifying for a trip to the collegiate nationals at Mammoth Mountain, Calif., said Orr, senior in advertising. “If we finish with the top two spots in our next race, we will advance to the national competition,” she said. This would be a second straight trip to nationals for team member Ana Sprowl, the club’s co-president.”We had a great time at nationals last year,” said Sprowl, junior in pre-advertising. “It was really cool to see all of the professional boarders who were there and to have the event covered by ESPN.”Although the race teams have enjoyed success, club members are quick to point out that competition is not the most important thing. “We really just enjoy getting together and having a good time,” Orr said. “That’s what the club is all about.” The group meets Wednesday nights and offers free ski lessons to newcomers at the Seven Oaks Recreation Area, off Highway 30, four miles west of Boone. The club also has annual winter and spring break trips available to anyone who pays club dues. Over Christmas break, the group spent a week in Steamboat Springs, Colo. and is planning a trip to Jackson Hole, Wyo., over spring break, said Will, senior in mechanical engineering. “The club trips are always a lot of fun,” Sprowl said. “We always find something crazy to do.”Will said this year’s trip to Jackson Hole includes lodging, lift tickets, charter bus transportation and other benefits. The cost of the trip is $410 and the group encourages anyone who is interested to join it. “We love having new people come and hang out with us,” Sprowl said. “It’s a great time on the slopes and a good way to make new friends.”
