The Inter-Residence Hall Association will end its semester session tonight by asking the parliament to fund a women’s conference next semester.

Two representatives from the conference spoke to parliament members at the Nov. 16 meeting when the bill was introduced.

“[The conference] will be beneficial to both sexes,” said Rebecca Britten, sophomore in biology. “The topics that will be discussed will be about work places that women work in today and the issues that they deal with.”

Kirsten Greenough, senior in elementary education, said she expects between 75 and 100 people at the Jan. 20 conference.

“The conference was successful last year,” she said. “We’re working hard on this one.”

IRHA President Paul Duncan said parliament members should have a positive response to the bill.

“I think it’s a great idea that IRHA’s sponsoring something that benefits what the conference brings,” he said. “It will teach valuable lessons not only to the women who attend but to others as well. It’ll be a ripple effect.”

Also, Duncan said there will be a bylaw bill presented at the meeting that will change the way IRHA can vote for the approval of board rate increases.

“In order for a board rate increase to be passed by IRHA, it has to pass by majority,” he said. “We want to change it to a two-thirds vote.”

The meeting will be tonight at 7 in the Gallery Room of the Memorial Union.
