IRHA to discuss forming IT committee

The Inter-Residence Hall Association will introduce a bill tonight asking to add a committee to the bylaws that will assist the IRHA director of information technologies.

Wallace Hall Rep. Michael Mikkelson said having this committee would be helpful for IRHA promotion among students.

“[The committee] will do research if the parliament wanted them to on information technology issues,” he said. “They’ll also keep the Web site up to date.”

Mikkelson said he believed IRHA had considered adding the committee in the past, but there was not a demand for it at the time.

“Technology is getting more advanced,” he said. “It takes more people and more time to do things with the Web.”

However, director of information technologies, Jeremy Hayes, said he wasn’t sure whether the committee would be necessary.

“I’ve been in this position for a long time, and I don’t think that these duties warrant the need for the committee,” he said.

Hayes said he wouldn’t actively express his opinion on the matter at the meeting, but he said he knows he’ll be asked about it sooner or later.

“I don’t see the need for it,” he said, “But I’ll be more than happy to hear what they have to say and see what potential benefits they see having [from this committee].”

Also, parliament will have the first read of a bill that requests IRHA financial assistance for a women’s conference next semester.

Oak-Elm Representative Laural Everist-Lambert, co-author of the bill, said the conference will cater information and helpful hints to all sexes.

“It’s a women’s conference, but it’s not limited to women,” she said. “This conference explores the diverse role of women in the world and informs all students about scholarships, job searching and financial planning.”

Everist-Lambert said she is requesting $500 from the IRHA discretionary account, $700 from the Oak-Elm programming board and $500 from Richardson Court Association to fund the conference.

“I think it’ll definitely meet some opposition,” she said. “They’ll want to go back to their constituents and think about it. They must remember that it will be promoting women’s leadership to men and women alike.”

The meeting will be at 7 tonight in the Gallery Room of the Memorial Union.
