IRHA to pay Homecoming fees

The Inter-Residence Hall Association voted to help the Richardson Court Association pay for fees associated with the residence hall Homecoming team.

RCA President Andy Walling co-authored the bill at Thursday’s meeting. The bill, which was passed 20-1-2, asked for $1,000 from the IRHA special events account to help cover costs such as entry fees and supplies associated with the team.

“There are a lot of things that we do before Homecoming, and some of the fees are due,” he said. “It’s a breakthrough year. We have to be competitive and participate.”

Some parliament members felt the team should have been a principal IRHA event, and they expressed concern about the majority of team members being from RCA.

Towers Residence Association President Jonathon Weaver suggested an alternative way of giving money to the team.

“I would have no problem if we gave an amount that was proportional to the number of associations that are involved,” he said.

Union Drive Association President Rick Cordaro said he approved of the bill and that nothing could be done about the proportion of people who participate.

“TRA and UDA don’t have the same turnout as RCA. They were all invited to get involved,” he said. “The money needs to go somewhere – I think it is OK to give it to RCA.”

Pat Blair, director of special events, said he did not mind the money being given to RCA because it will help support all of the residence hall students participating in Homecoming competitions.

“Andy’s done a good job [organizing the effort]. I should’ve gotten involved,” he said. “I have no problem with the money being given to them.”

In other IRHA-related news, Natasha Krentz, sophomore in aerospace engineering, was seated as director of academic affairs by a vote of 16-7.

Also, two bylaw amendment bills and another bill concerning maintenance reviews in the residence halls were put on the agenda to be voted on at this week’s meeting.
