IRHA passes bill to expand juice availability

A usual breakfast staple may be made available at every meal due to a passed bill by the Inter-Residence Hall Association.

IRHA parliament members deliberated for over an hour Thursday on a bill that would offer juice at breakfast, lunch and dinner starting in the fall of 2001. The bill passed 13-10-2.

“We’re going to leave it up to the [Department of Residence] to decide how to do it at the least possible expense,” said Jonathon Weaver, Towers Residence Association president.

The bill met opposition from parliament members who said their constituents were against the bill because it would increase their room and board. The estimated cost of juice at every meal is $20 per resident per semester.

Richardson Court Association President Andy Walling said the RCA senate was strongly against the bill. “The people of RCA don’t want this — at least 50 floors voted against [the bill],” he said. “Very rarely do you find an assembly so for or so against something.”

David Boike, Union Drive Association at-large, said UDA residents expressed support, and he said they wondered why juice hadn’t been brought up before in IRHA or to the Department of Residence. “It was essentially unanimous in support [at house meetings],” he said. “For the past three years, I’ve heard more than 25 times of students pointing out why juice wasn’t available.”

Weaver said it will now be up to the Department of Residence to decide how to put this bill into action next fall.

“This bill now allows the DOR to find the best way to implement this plan,” he said.
