A new Inter-Residence Hall Association president and vice president will be appointed by the parliament at next Thursday’s IRHA meeting, according to a vote taken by IRHA members at their meeting Thursday. President Tom Plagge and Vice President Chris Benson were removed from office immediately after Hawthorn Court residents voted against joining IRHA. According to the IRHA constitution, all executive members must live in a residence hall during their term in office. “Thank you to everyone in the room who has helped out in the last few months,” Plagge said. “I hope you guys will work this thing out quickly and smoothly.” According to the IRHA constitution, the IRHA finance director fills the vacant presidential seat. However, Plagge and Benson’s executive council had not been seated and approved by parliament yet, so no one was in the position to take the seat. “There are a couple actions we can take,” said Rick Cordaro, Union Drive Association president. “We can seat the [executive branch] ourselves, call a general election, or we can have a vote by the parliament.” The parliament members put together a petition for a meeting to take place so they could discuss how to rebuild the executive branch. Cordaro put together the agenda for the meeting and called it to order. Immediately the seven seated parliament members appointed Jonathon Weaver, Towers Residence Association president, as Chair Pro Tem to preside over the meetings. During the discussion on how to appoint the new executive council, Richardson Court Association at-large representative Steve Skutnik said that any student should have the opportunity to lead IRHA. “I think we should allow it open to the general public,” Skutnik said. “[A parliamentary appointment] would let them speak in front of parliament.” Students who fill out the applications will be allowed to present their platform for two minutes in front of parliament at next Thursday’s meeting. After hearing all speakers, the parliament will vote for Plagge’s replacement. The same process will be used for the vice president. “The open nominations will be available for any student who has been living in the residence halls for at least two semesters,” Cordaro said. Applications will be available at the UDA, TRA and RCA hall desks Monday and at the IRHA Web site, www.stuorg.iastate.edu/irha/. They are due at noon Thursday in the IRHA office, 2415 Friley.
