Action flicks, sequels dominate summer
May 15, 2000
Since blockbuster films such as “Battlefield Earth” and “Gladiator” have already hit the big screen to kick off the summer-movie season, the stage has been set for the next few months, which will be jam-packed with films from all genres.
With everything from the latest in computer animation to much anticipated sequels, the summer movie season promises to provide entertainment for those boring days. The Daily takes a look at some of the most anticipated films:
“Big Momma’s House”
Martin Lawrence continues to follow in the footsteps of Eddie Murphy as he becomes a master of disguise in “Big Momma’s House.” Lawrence plays a cop who assumes a new identity to take care of a woman in police custody.
“Dinosaur”
The latest from Disney brings this huge (in more ways the one) film to the screen. Combining live-action backgrounds with computer-generated animals, “Dinosaur” features the latest technologies.
“Gone in 60 Seconds”
To fill the action-movie void, Nicolas Cage stars in this car-heist thriller. Backing up Cage is a star-studded cast, which includes Angelina Jolie, Robert Duvall and Giovanni Ribisi.
Catering to the action-genre fan, this movie crams in high-speed chases and the wrecks that follow.
“Me, Myself & Irene”
The latest from Jim Carrey has him playing a man with split-personality disorder. The Farrelly brothers (“Something About Mary”) have created “Me, Myself & Irene,” which also stars Ren‚e Zellweger, Carrey’s real-life girlfriend.
“Mission: Impossible 2”
The long-awaited sequel to 1996’s “Mission: Impossible” brings Tom Cruise back into action. Ving Rhames returns, and Anthony Hopkins and a host of others are the new additions to Cruise’s team.
“MI:2” is expected to be one of the biggest draws of the summer-movie season.
“The Patriot”
Mel Gibson stars in this story of a veteran of the French-Indian war who is reluctant to see himself or his children become involved in the American Revolution.
This highly anticipated blockbuster brings Gibson back to his action roots amidst the backdrop of the American fight for freedom.
“The Perfect Storm”
George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg team up again after 1999’s “Three Kings,” but this time they are battling a major storm instead of the Gulf War.
When a dying tropical hurricane collides with a cold front from the Great Lakes, “the perfect storm” is created, pounding out 100-foot waves.
Clooney and Wahlberg are caught in the middle.
“Road Trip”
Four college guys hit the road to stop a revealing video tape from reaching a guy’s girlfriend in “Road Trip.”
This flick, which stars MTV’s Tom Green and “American Pie’s” Seann William Scott, may prove to live up to the hype, but if it doesn’t, Dreamworks will be feeling the pain in its wallet.
“Shaft”
Director John Singleton directs this addition to the classic 1970s film. “Shaft” stars none other than Samuel L. Jackson as John Shaft, Shaft’s namesake nephew.
The new Shaft is a street-smart detective like his uncle, and he and his partner played by Vanessa L. Williams, have been assigned to a racially motivated murder case.
“X-Men”
A big-screen adaptation of the most popular comic book series ever, “X-Men” stars Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos and Patrick Stewart among others.
X-Men are the next step in human nature, each born with some sort of genetic mutation that gives them amazing powers, which they have learned to use for the greater good.
