Six to represent ISU track at nationals

The Iowa State indoor track teams will be well-represented this year at the Indoor Track National Championships in Indianapolis.

The team will be sending six athletes who are on missions to capture All-American honors. The men’s and women’s teams each landed three athletes in the competition.

Heading the class is junior Jamie Beyer, who will compete in both the weight throw and shot put. Beyer made it into the championships after winning the Big 12 crown in the shot with a toss of 61 feet 11 3/4 inches. He is also rated No. 15 in the nation in the weight throw.

Beyer placed sixth in the shot put in the ’97 National tournament and is a favorite this year.

The men will also be represented by Quiande Moore, who is the No. 1 freshman in the nation in the triple jump. Moore leapt into the championships with a personal best of 51 feet 9 inches in the event.

Quinn Harris is the third male on the roster. The sprinter, who received All-American honors in ’97, is bouncing back from an injury that sidelined him from last year’s competition.

Harris has a season best of 6.66 seconds in the 60-meter dash.

The women are represented by Alienor Gilchrist, Trina Radske, and Lisa Griebel.

Gilchrist, an Ames native, clocked a 4:47.43 in the mile last month for a season best.

Radske will be competing in the long jump after sticking a jump of 20 feet 7 inches in December.

Griebel will be competing in the shot put after winning the conference title with a toss of 53 feet 7 1/2 inches last weekend.

Congratulations to the teams on their successes this year, and watch out for them next year.

The National Championships will be held this weekend in Indianapolis.
