The Iowa State Tennis team lost its third consecutive meet on Friday, falling 9-0 to the Minnesota Gophers at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Club.

The Cyclones did not claim a set in the singles matches. In doubles, the ISU pairing of Noortje Cornelissen and Karin Westberg sent the No. 1 match to a tiebreaker before falling 9-8 to the Gopher duo of Kim Simonsen and Andrea Rose.

In No. 1 singles, Nora Sauska of Minnesota defeated Cornelissen 6-1, 6-2. Simonsen of Minnesota defeated Andrean Simons of ISU 6-2, 6-1 in No. 2 singles.

The No. 3 match was the nadir for Iowa State: Edna Vazquez fell to Minnesota’s Sitinee Rangsithienchai 6-0, 6-0.

The Cyclones attempted a comeback in the last three singles matches: In No. 4, ISU’s Kendra Leese kept it close for a set before falling 6-4, 6-1, to Gopher Tarah Elkins.

Cyclone No. 5 Mary Rumboa kept her match close through both sets, but she too fell, losing to Jennifer Howard of Minnesota, 6-4, 6-3.

Minnesota’s Jana Hridnova completed the singles sweep by defeating Sharla Whitaker of ISU, 6-3, 6-3, in No. 6 singles.

Though the Cyclones took the No. 1 doubles to a tiebreaker, Minnesota won the tiebreak 7-3, and claimed the match 9-8, to take a 7-0 lead in the meet.

The final two doubles matches also went to the Gophers: in No. 2, Rangsithienchai and Elkins defeated ISU’s Vazquez and Kendra Leese 8-2. Minnesota pair Sauska and Howard completed the whitewash with a 8-4 win over Rumboa and Simons.

ISU is now 1-5 and 0-3 in conference play. It looks to get its first Big 12 and Division 1 win of the season against Kansas State this Wednesday at noon in the Ames Racquet and Fitness Club.
