Verbosity

W.F. Hollander

Virginia Allen wrote in to the Daily on Dec. 10 and gave us a quarter page of opinion. As a professor of English, Ms. Allen presumably exemplifies her standard of prose writing. Also, she claims to know “a little bit” about argument.

I’m no purist about their prose or argument, but I find hers to be quite difficult reading. Part of my difficulty is with verbosity — one sentence has 58 words, and seven others have 35 or more. I think I figured out the opinion, but maybe not. SAAD!
